AIGov vs AI governance consulting: a starter kit you own, or an engagement built around you

For a bank or credit union with one or two people owning AI readiness, the choice is often a kit versus an advisory project. They do different jobs. This page says plainly what a consultant provides that a kit does not.

Side by side

Consulting engagements vary by firm. This describes the general pattern, not any named firm.

 AIGovConsulting engagement
CategoryA kit of editable policies, checklists and training. Documents you adopt yourself. An advisory engagement: interviews, analysis, findings and a deliverable written for your institution.
ScopeThe foundation: acceptable-use policy, use-case inventory, risk tiering, approval workflow and RACI, incident response, audit checklist, AI literacy training. The Banking Pack adds banking-specific content.Varies by proposal. Commonly an AI inventory and risk classification, policy and accountability model, vendor due diligence and regulatory mapping, sometimes with ongoing governance leadership.
SpeedTemplates you can start editing the day you get them. Checkout is not open yet, so join the notify list.Typically weeks, depending on scope and your team’s availability for interviews and review.
Ownership of editable filesWord, Excel and PDF files you edit and own for your institution, plus optional Living Updates.Depends on the contract. Deliverables are usually a point-in-time snapshot that your team maintains afterward.
TailoringYou tailor the templates yourself. A kit does not interview your staff or assess your specific systems.Built around your institution: findings, populated inventory and recommendations specific to you.
Examiner-facing supportNone. The audit checklist helps you prepare, but AIGov does not represent you to examiners.Often available as an added service, depending on the firm.

Where each fits bestA small team that needs working policies, an inventory process and training this quarter, and wants files it controls. An institution that needs tailored analysis, hands-on implementation help, independent challenge or exam preparation.

Who should choose which

Choose AIGov if

  • One or two people own regulatory readiness across many domains.
  • You need policies, an inventory, risk tiers, a RACI and training you can adopt this quarter.
  • You want editable files you control, with prices published openly.
  • You can complete and maintain the inventory and evidence yourselves.

Hire a consultant if

  • You need analysis tailored to your institution, with findings and recommendations.
  • You want hands-on help populating the inventory or implementing controls.
  • You need independent challenge or validation of your approach.
  • You want support preparing for an examination.

Use both: start from a baseline

A kit and a consultant are not mutually exclusive. Start with a baseline of policies, inventory process, risk tiers, RACI and training, then bring in an advisor for the parts that need judgment about your institution. Consultants are welcome to use AIGov as a starting point for their clients.

AIGov is also designed to be a foundation you can later load into a governance platform such as Credo AI, ValidMind or OneTrust. See the AIGov vs Credo AI comparison →

Questions

Is AIGov a replacement for an AI governance consultant?

No. A kit gives you editable starting documents. A consultant tailors work to your institution, interviews your staff and can support you through an exam. AIGov is not equivalent to a consulting engagement.

Can I use AIGov and still hire a consultant?

Yes. Many teams start from a solid baseline and bring in an advisor for validation, tailoring or exam preparation. Starting from the kit can narrow what you need to pay an advisor to do.

What does a consulting engagement cost?

It varies widely by firm and scope, and published estimates come from the firms themselves. We do not quote consulting prices here. Ask for a written proposal. AIGov pricing is not yet published.

Does the kit include a populated inventory or findings?

No. AIGov supplies the templates and processes. You complete the inventory and evidence for your own institution.

Is this legal advice?

No. AIGov materials are starting points for your own governance program. Have your own counsel review anything before adopting it.
